I am come back home to find that the Chinese government is in the midst of a piracy crack-down. 100 days of no DVDs!!!! My DVD man told me it has something to do with trade agreements with the US. Eight departments of the government are involved and the police are very visibly patrolling the streets. Previously, when there was an 'alert', I would be ushered into what seemed to be a walk-in wardrobe and allowed to browse through the latest offerings. But now, even the wardrobe is empty... This crackdown will end on the 15th of October, so I’ll be there when the doors open. According to the notices, there will be more crack-downs later. (At least they have the courtesy of announcing them so that the shops can hide the DVDs that they do have.) I am going to be in Kunming tomorrow evening so I can pick up some books in English. (The only English books available where I live are the classics - Robinson Crusoe and Little Women… which I’m tired of). |
